The Show in Text

Below is a re-cap of the show in text form.  Not exactly word for word but hopefully you get the gist:

------------------------

Sometimes the problem with being creative is the getting going.  You get lost in the bigger picture, the idea of the thing you want it to be rather than actually starting,

You get stuck when you should just get on with it!

Even if what you create isn't very good, normally the act of starting is enough to kick you on your journey to creating the thing you want.

Keep creating.  To get good at something you need to keep practicing.  It doesn’t matter if you are writing a book, painting a picture or sewing an heirloom quilt, the more you do the better you will get.

I like to look back at my early patchwork projects, I started out in sewing Hexagons by English Paper Piecing.  I have many hexagon flowers that never made it into a project because my stitches were rubbish, my colour combos where atrocious, my points were off and so on.

It was a journey though and now I can see the difference in my style from when I started.  Am I perfect, heck no, do I care, of course not!  I pick it up every day, do a little more and that makes me feel positive.

Don’t get bogged down by the pieces of work that suck, the fact that you gave it a go means you are one step ahead.  Dust yourself off and keep on going.

Compare your creative self to an athlete, they don’t just get good at the their sport by showing up, they practice, all day, every day.  To get good at your craft you need to do start and do a bit every day.

Looking back at my heirloom quilt, I didn’t just wake up and make it, I started it and it took me 3 years and many thousands of hours to make it.  The marathon equivalent of patchwork quilting.

My point being, if I had never started with those first rubbish hexagon flowers, I’d never have completely fallen in love with the craft of English Paper Piecing and connected my joy and happiness for it that makes me feel so positive when sewing.

Don’t be scared to try, don’t be scared to start.  It doesn’t matter how many times you have to start.  Keep moving forward and growing your creative skill levels, one day you can reflect back on the special things you have created.

In order to create you have to start, take your success, go on start!  Once you start, never stop!
